چکیده

Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) data derived by the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) from Jan 2001 to Feb 2002 were compared with AOT measurements from 16 Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites over the contiguous United States. Overall, MISR and AERONET AOTs were strongly correlated (correlation coefficient = 0.81). Regression analysis showed that MISR AOT retrievals had a positive error of approximately 0.10 with no systematic bias across the data range. Importantly, our findings showed that the positive errors in MISR AOT were greater during the spring and summer. Additionally, the presence of coarse particles in the aerosol led to increased errors which weakened the association between MISR and AERONET. Finally, it is unlikely that the current results will vary when using alternative MISR AOT parameters since our analysis also showed the MISR AOT parameters (best fit, regional mean, and weighted regional mean AOTs) to be interchangeable. Together these results suggest that MISR AOT measurements may be suitable for quantitative analysis of aerosol abundance.

Validation of Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aerosol optical thickness measurements using Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations over the contiguous United States

[1] Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) data retrieved by the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) in 2001 were compared with AOT measurements from 16 Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites over the contiguous United States. Overall, MISR and AERONET AOTs were strongly correlated (r = 0.73). Regression analysis showed that the root mean square error (RMSE) of MISR AOT was 0.05. The overall ...

Assessment of OMI near-UV aerosol optical depth over land

This is the first comprehensive assessment of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) product retrieved from the near-UV observations by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard the Aura satellite. The OMI-retrieved AOD by the UV aerosol algorithm (OMAERUV version 1.4.2) was evaluated using collocated Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) level 2.0 direct Sun AOD measurements over 8 years (2005–2012)....

Aerosol optical thicknesses over North Africa: 1. Development of a product for model validation using Ozone Monitoring Instrument, Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer, and Aerosol Robotic Network

[1] Daily aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at 0.55 mm over the desert regions is needed as a source of validation for numerical models such as the United Kingdom’s Numerical Weather Prediction Unified Model. We examined the relationship between monthly mean ultraviolet (UV) absorbing aerosol index (AI) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) that is available on a daily basis with the Multian...

The MODIS Aerosol Algorithm, Products and Validation

The MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard both NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites is making near global daily observations of the earth in a wide spectral range (0.41 to 15 μm). These measurements are used to derive spectral aerosol optical thickness and aerosol size parameters over both land and ocean. The aerosol products available over land include aerosol optical thickn...

Mapping annual mean ground-level PM2.5 concentrations using Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer aerosol optical thickness over the contiguous United States

[1] We present a simple approach to estimating ground-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5, particles smaller than 2.5 mm in diameter) concentrations by applying local scaling factors from a global atmospheric chemistry model (GEOS-CHEM with GOCART dust and sea salt data) to aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieved by the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR). The resulting MISR PM2.5 co...
